On the threat of anti-trans ideology to the pursuit of academic enquiry

Imposters: a new blog post by Matt Barnard

Dear subscribers,

We are at the end of the second week of voting in the UCU NEC casual vacancy elections. If your postal ballot has not yet arrived at the address you have registered on MyUCU, you can now request a replacement.

Earlier this week, we shared a blog post by our candidate for UK-wide rep (HE), Matt Barnard, about alienation in academia. Today, we share as second post by Matt with you, which is about the anti-intellectualism of anti-trans ideology. A core value of UCU Commons is unequivocal support for trans rights, and Matt’s post summarises perfectly the anti-intellectual threat that anti-trans ideology poses to the pursuit of academic enquiry. We encourage you to read it and share it with your contacts.

A reminder that if you are a member working in the North East (which consists of the Northern and Yorkshire and Humberside regions) you will also be able to vote in the casual vacancy election for a regional candidate. UCU Commons NEC members are endorsing Adam Hansen alongside Matt.

Finally, UCU Commons HEC reps are conducting a survey of members to gather more qualitative data on our current industrial disputes ahead of HEC on Monday 1st September. We will close the form at 5pm today, Friday 29th August, so if you have not yet completed this and passed to your contacts, we would urge you to do this today.

In solidarity
